Alex's Class Play
April, 17 2011 02:20 PM
Last week Alex’s 1/2 grade class performed a play for
the school. It is a retelling of a book they read as
a class, but the interpretation as a play is all
their own. A movie of the performance is available on
the Movies page. Sorry that the audio is kind of hard
to make out -- that’s the best a handheld camera
could do in that large auditorium.

Alex's First Karate Tournament
March, 28 2011 10:05 PM
Last weekend, Alex participated in his very first
karate tournament. He has been doing karate for a
little over a year now (since January, 2010) so this
was a big deal to him.
The tournament was organized by his karate teacher, but included a number of other schools from the area so the turnout was pretty good. Alex participated in two competitions: a forms competition, where he had to demonstrate the green belt form (a set series of moves); and second a sparring competition, where he sparred against two other kids at his age and belt level. Because this was a mixed youth and adult tournament, he ended up competing against 2 other kids in each event, since it was restricted by age and belt level.
Alex did great in both competitions. He did very well with his form, coming in second of the three contestants. He did even better in sparring, winning both of his matches and really sticking in there all the way to the end both times.
You can see a video of each of his competitions (forms and 2 sparring matches) on the movies page. We’re very proud of him!

I mentioned last time that I would try to post Alex’s
Harry Potter poem. Here it is, but first a bit of
background.

Harry Potter... Poetry?
February, 22 2011 08:47 PM
A few times a year at Alex’s school, they do what are
called focus studies, where teachers and other parent
volunteers run a week of interesting lessons and
activities around various topics. This time Alex
chose a Harry Potter poetry writing focus study. In
it they watch a few carefully selected minutes of one
of the Harry Potter movies and then write a poem
inspired by about what they saw. At the end of the
week they held a poetry reading where each student
got to read one of their poems out loud and parents
could come and listen. Sue went and took a video of
Alex reading his poem, now posted on the movies tab.
The audio is not the best -- I will try to get the actual poem to post here soon.
